Does taking risks make Jonathan a hero?

I was interested when Jonathan made his risk by telling them where he was, ultimately he was made fun of for being a young fool in a war. Even though that had occurred Jonathan was making his risk by trying to pay attention secretly to what the Dutch speaking soldiers were saying. For example, in pg. 66 it said " Carefully, furtively, he studied their faces, trying to guess their thought and moods. " Another thing he was doing was making sure he wasn't a threat by trying to understand and communicate with the three soldiers.
